A textbook Gracie Barra Austin affiliate — predictable curriculum, friendly room, and a kids program that's actually structured. Less personality than the best indies, but very high floor.

I attended an evening fundamentals class and a Saturday open mat. The Fundamentals class was on point — GB curriculum, clean delivery, two reps per side, positional drilling. Saturday open mat was looser and friendlier than most GB open mats I’ve been to.

The room

Wide mat space, good A/C in an Austin building that almost certainly needs good A/C. Front desk staffed and welcoming.

The teaching

The head coach was teaching, not a brown belt covering. That’s a green flag at any GB. Curriculum block followed by positional drilling, then live rounds for the upper belts and technique-focused rolls for the lower belts.

The roll

Solid. Two white belts, one blue, all of whom respected the tap. The blue caught me clean from half guard and then walked me through what I’d done wrong. That’s the GB I want to recommend.

Verdict

For a structured, predictable, gi-friendly room in Austin, this is the safe pick. If you’re looking for more no-gi or more personality, the city has options. If you’re starting BJJ later in life and want to be able to walk into any GB worldwide and feel oriented, this is your spot.

About this gym

+How does this gym handle traveling students?

GB Austin affiliates typically waive drop-in fees for active GB members from other affiliates. Confirm with the front desk.

+Is the Austin BJJ scene gi-heavy or no-gi-heavy?

Mixed. This affiliate runs gi-first with two no-gi slots a week. Other Austin gyms lean further no-gi.
